Background & challenge
When I joined Transcarent, we were undergoing a major redesign with an external agency. While the agency established the initial visual foundation, the design system was incomplete, lacked structure, and needed significant refinement to support real product work.
As the product expanded, inconsistencies emerged across components, naming conventions, accessibility standards, and the translation from design to code. Web and mobile engineering teams also needed a single source of truth to reduce duplication and accelerate development.
Design system ownership
Took full ownership of the design system after the agency handoff, transforming early foundations into a scalable, production-ready system
Audited existing assets and consolidated duplicate or outdated components to streamline usage across teams
Component library & visual system
Designed and documented new components, states, and patterns for both web and mobile
Refined visual foundations — color, typography, spacing, icons, imagery — ensuring accessibility and consistency across web and mobile
Cross-functional alignment
Partnered closely with engineering to establish proper naming conventions and component structure in both codebases
Worked with web and mobile engineers to align behaviors, variants, and interactions across platforms
Set up processes for new component requests, reviews, and maintenance to ensure long-term scalability
System governance & collaboration
Established clear documentation for how components are used and updated
Improved collaboration rituals with designers and engineers to keep the system reflecting real product needs
Integrated updated brand colors, icons, and imagery from Marketing into the design system
