Overview
350NYC is a grassroots climate organization behind the Green New Deal effort in New York. I designed the public website that became the group's main portal, launched in March 2020.
Problem
350NYC had collected climate policy documents and solutions into an unwieldy spreadsheet — unusable for the public and with no way for the community to vote on proposals.
What I did
- Ran team discussions to define the site's core purpose and needed features: voting, document submission, org info, and mailing list signup
- Audited the source spreadsheet and mapped its 11 topics, subtopics, and source-document codes into a real information architecture
- Prototyped hover-reveal subtopics, a solution list with voting, and search
- Designed high-fidelity screens in black (matching the logo) with hamburger nav and a prominent donate CTA
- Validated designs with 350NYC members in bi-weekly meetings, adding a blog and simplifying signup based on feedback
- Partnered with the developer to keep the design buildable on WordPress
Outcome
A public site letting the community browse policy topics, vote on solutions, and join the mailing list — live since March 2020.
