Overview
Tern is a data catalog tool that helps people discover data by searching through metadata. The underlying data and structure already existed — it needed a designer to turn lineage graphs and search flows into a real frontend.
Problem
All the data and flows were built, but nothing was consolidated into a coherent, user-friendly interface — especially the data lineage visualizations.
What I did
- Learned the software's core features and how its data figures worked
- Explored visual approaches for representing data lineage graphs clearly
- Wireframed to connect every step of the search-and-discovery flow
- Built a style guide and high-fidelity screens, iterating against engineering constraints
Outcome
A consolidated, visualized data discovery experience ready for frontend integration.
